Vudu is Nothing New

Vudu Another company has decided that we still don’t have enough choices when it comes to watching movies. Vudu promises access to over 5,000 movies with its 250-gigabyte hard drive that will handle about 100 hours of storage. The Vudu runs by Ethernet with at least a 2 Mbpm broadband Internet connection. In time, the box will have more storage capability with an additional USB hard drive. The price of the Vudu is $399.00 and although there is no subscription fee, you pay 99 cents to $3.99 to rent or $4.99 to $19.99 to own. The way we go through movies around here makes us think that with that kind of spending, we could probably purchase a new car by the end of the year. We’ll just be satisfied with our now dependable NetFlix which we figure pays for itself in the first week of any given month.

Beo5 Arrives Open Minded

For those with bucks, Bang & Olufsen is introducing its Beo5 Remote that features a universal language and the ability to be programmed for any combination of functions after purchase. It can be customized at your local store for home entertainment, security, appliances, lighting, etc. At a size of 69.3 x 115.8 x 32.3 mm and a weight of 205 g, its ambidextrous functions and buttons can be changed, added, or removed. On a full charge, it will last about 18 hours and comes with a decent 3.6 meter cable for flexibility. Available any time now, expect the adaptable Beo5 to set you back $560.00.

HBO Purchases Second Life Mini-Doc

Just as Donick Cary got his break on Comedy Central with Lil’ Bush, HBO has paid a 6 figure amount to Douglas Gayeton, aka Molotov Alta, for his Second Life documentary short. The plot of “My Second Life: The Video Diaries of Molotov Alta” involves a man who “disappeared from his California home” and begins sending video messages from the site. Set to be released in 2008, HBO plans on a total of 7 mini-episodes that use the machinima process based on the virtual world.

Bert and Ernie Represent Spike and Mike?

Spike and Mike We now know that even big corporations make ~~intentional~~

mistakes. Someone found this image attached to the NetFlix offering for “Spike and Mikes’s Twisted Festival of Animation: Contagious.” We have seen some of the pair’s animation, which features mostly r-rated cartoons such as “No Neck Joe” by the Power Puff Girls’ creator Craig McCracken. About the closest it gets to Sesame Street is its naughty Happy Tree Friends. The error has since been corrected, but it certainly makes you wonder why it wasn’t discovered when it was originally posted.

Samsung Unveils BD-P2400 Blu-Ray Player

Samsung has reignited the ongoing disc conflict by offering its next generation Blu-ray BD-P2400 during the recent IFA 2007. The player features Dolby True HD and Digital Plus and a built-in HQV(Hollywood Quality Video) processor for 1080i to 1080p HD de-interlacing. It also has HDMI (version 1.3,) 7.1Ch audio out, and ethernet capability for a firmware upgrade. We notice that Blu-ray offerings are trickling out as it seems most companies are still not willing to make the commitment one way or the other. Have you?

Yesterday we told you about Nokia’s four new offspring. We found a video that was done in honor of one of them, the N-81. We sure hope Nokia is paying attention. Not only can this help the career of the

band singing it, Pop4Real, we would love to see commercials like this instead of the heavy sell that we are inundated with constantly. Heck, we were about ready to preorder one of the video/game players after listening to the catchy tune without even realizing that it will set us back €430 (~$588.00.)

Sony to Release Next Generation of Walkmans

Sony has unveiled its two latest video Walkmans to the U.S. The NWZ-S618 features a 1.8-inch QVGA LCD Screen and an FM tuner with 30 presets that can give you up to 9 1/2 hours of video fun. The deluxe NWZ-A810 has a 2-inch QVGA LCD display with higher quality ear buds and up to 8 hours of video playback. Both players support Windows Media audio, non-secure AAC and MP3 formats, allow JPEG photo files, and feature an AVC (H.264/AVC) Baseline Profile and MPEG-4 video codecs. The battery will provide up to 33 hours of music playback. Look for the new players to debut next month.

Sanyo’s New Diminutive Xacti

Sanyo has unveiled what they claim is the smallest and lightest HD digital cam on the planet. With a volume of only 16.6 cubic inches and a weight of only 9.5 ounces, the Xacti HD 1000 features an 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution that can record up to 85 minutes of 1081i high-def or over 5 hours of TV quality video with an 8G SD card (not included.) Sanyo’s new technology allows for only one processing chip while utilizing 4.2 watts of power. Its “Face Chaser” automatically detects and isolates up to 12 figures for auto-focus and proper exposure. The Xacti will be available in the U.S. next month and will retail for $799.99, which makes it about $84.00 per ounce.

Toshiba Unveils Gigabeat T401

Toshiba Japan has just released their Gigabeat T401 with a 2.4-inch screen 320 x 240 pixel display, 802.11b/g WiFi, and 4 GB memory. It is capable of 16 hours of audio or 5 hours of video playback. Available in red, white, or black, the player is 9.9 mm thick, is USB connectible, and runs on Windows Mobile software. Expected out Sept. 7 as a WiFi free version for ¥24,800 (~$217.00,) a full Gigabeat will be available Oct. 5 for ¥29,800 (~$261.00.)
